Maple Key Day Camp

Safety/Emergency Policies

Our number one priority is your child's safety. We understand that you are trusting us with your most precious posessions when you send your kids to camp, and we take that trust very seriously. Here are just a few of the many policies we have in place to keep your child safe. If you have a specific concern that is not addressed below, please call us at (613) 464-2468 or e-mail us for more information.

Pick Up Policy
We take attendance every day as campers arrive, and we check them out as they are picked up. On the registration form, you will have the opportunity to list those individuals who have your authority to pick your children up from camp. We will not allow your child to be picked up by anyone else without your prior written consent. To help facilitate this procedure, please note that parents and other authorized people are not permitted inside the building during drop off and pick up times. After reporting to the staff member on duty, your camper will be brought out to the car for you. If you would like a tour of the camp facility, please attend our open house or make an appointment at any time with the directors.
Hygiene
Campers wash their hands thoroughly before each meal and snack under the supervision of staff. We do not share water bottles, drinks, or food brought from home.
Staff Identification
Our staff uniform includes a camp t-shirt that makes it easy for both campers and parents to identify who the counselors are at camp. Our names are on our shirts, so you always know who you are talking to.

Staff Training
All of our staff are required to obtain first aid and CPR certification prior to the start of camp. In addition, we have emergency procedures in place that are practiced during pre-camp.

Sun & Heat Protection
We have frequent sunscreen touch-up and water breaks built into our schedule, and all of our staff model proper sun safety for our campers. Our counselors will supervise application of sunscreen and will ensure that campers drink water frequently. Please send your child with waterproof sunscreen, water bottle and hat.
Our afternoon programming (during the hottest part of the day) is designed to alternate between outdoor and indoor activities, and between high and low levels of activity. As a small camp we have the flexibility to adjust our schedule to suit the weather conditions, so on especially hot days we will spend additional time indoors or in the shade.

Medication
The camp director will administer medication to your child only according to directions on the registration form. We will not administer any medication without written instructions. We strongly encourage parents of children with serious health concerns such as severe allergies leading to anaphylactic shock, severe asthma, seizure disorders and diabetes, etc., to have proper identification on the camper (i.e. Medic-Alert bracelet) at all times. Campers with serious allergies are required to carry an epi-pen on their person at all times.

Nut Allergies
While we cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment, we have adopted the "nut-aware" policy similar to most schools. We ask that parents avoid packing any products containing nuts. If your child has a nut allergy, please be sure to indicate this on the registration form and take proper precautions including having your child carry his/her epi-pen at all times. All of our staff are made aware of which of our campers have allergies, and are trained to recognize the symptoms of anaphylaxis.
Discipline and Code of Behaviour
We maintain an environment of mutual respect for all campers and staff. We have a policy of no foul language, including no rude/offensive t-shirts, and we do not tolerate bullying of any kind.

We believe the best way to avoid inappropriate behavior is to plan an engaging program that keeps our campers so busy they have no time to act out. We also make our expectations clear from the start so that campers know what is acceptable. However, we have a policy in place for any problems that should arise:

1 st Offense:             Camp rules are reviewed with the camper.
2 nd Offense:           Time out from activity
3 rd Offense:            Call to parents.

We will make every effort to help every child to have a successful time at camp. However, if, in the opinion of the director, a child presents a serious risk to him/herself and/or others, he or she will be asked not to return to camp.

New Camper Clause: We are so confident that your child will love camp, we guarantee it! If your child is not a happy camper at the end of the first day, we will give you a full refund.
